First Tomatoes Go Into The Earth

The first ten tomato plants of the year are in the ground (in the hoop house). Last year, there were 4 tomatoes in the hoop house, planted in plastic bags, around May 15th. This year, I dug a proper trench and added lots of composted manure and will soon set up a soaker hose. If they survive the cool nights of the next month or so, they should do much better than last year’s hoop house tomatoes. Here we have Sungold, Sapho, Bloody Butcher, and Matt’s Wild Cherry. Another row of ten more will be planted about 8 feet to the right, once I get that trench installed. I’m hoping for a tomato in June.
